Activation
Transit mechanic
An activation is a planet sitting in a gate, switching that gate on. Your chart is the set of activations from your two birth moments. Transits add temporary ones on top. The word covers both, so it is worth being clear which kind is meant: one is permanent and yours, the other is passing and shared.
Aura
Concept
The energetic field that extends around and beyond the physical body. Each Type has a distinct aura quality that operates automatically: Generator/MG (open, enveloping), Manifestor (closed, repelling), Projector (focused, penetrating), Reflector (resistant, sampling).
Aura contact
Relationship mechanic
Aura contact is what happens in the roughly two metres around a person, where two designs actually meet. Charts do not interact at a distance in any mechanical sense; they interact in the aura. This is why a phone call and a shared room are genuinely different experiences of the same pairing.
Authority
Concept
The inner decision-making body. The specific center or mechanism that gives correct guidance for significant life decisions. Not the mind. Seven types: Emotional, Sacral, Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected, Mental/No Inner, Lunar.
Awareness centre
Chart structure
There are three awareness centres: the Ajna, the Spleen and the Solar Plexus. Each is a different kind of knowing. The Ajna is mental and works in concepts. The Spleen is instinctive and speaks once, quietly, in the present moment. The Solar Plexus is emotional and needs time rather than immediacy.
Ayanamsa
Zodiac frame
The ayanamsa is the angle between the tropical zodiac and a sidereal one: how far the equinox point has drifted from the stars. Subtract it from a tropical position and you have the position against the constellations. This app uses the Chimenti ayanamsa, a little over 31 degrees today and growing slowly with precession, which moves a chart just under six gates from where a tropical calculation puts it.
Base
Variables · depth
Base is the deepest level of the variable structure, below Colour and Tone. It is extremely sensitive to birth time, and a few minutes of error will change it, so it is the layer to treat with the most caution. Very little practical guidance depends on it.
Bodygraph
Concept
The bodygraph is the chart diagram itself: nine centres, thirty-six channels and sixty-four gates, drawn from the positions of the sun, moon and planets at two moments. Coloured shapes are defined, meaning consistent and reliable. White shapes are open, meaning you take in and amplify what is around you. Everything else in Human Design is read off this one picture, so learning to see it is most of the work.
Borrowed wiring
Transit mechanic
Borrowed wiring is our term for a channel completed by a transit rather than by your own chart. For a day or two you have access to something that is not permanently yours. It is worth noticing and worth enjoying. It is not worth restructuring anything around, because it leaves when the planet does.
Channel
Concept
A defined connection between two centers, formed when both gates at each end of the channel are activated. Channels are the source of consistent, reliable energy and themes in the chart.
Circuit
Concept
A circuit is the grouping a gate or channel belongs to, and it tells you what that energy ultimately serves. There are three families. Collective energy is for sharing, and wants to be understood by many people. Individual energy is for empowerment, and mutates rather than persuades. Tribal energy is for support, and is designed for the specific people close to you rather than for strangers. The same gate reads differently depending on which family it sits in.
Colour
Variables · depth
Colour is the first level of detail inside a variable, and there are six of them in each domain. It describes the broad motivation or mode operating there. Colour, Tone and Base are three levels of increasing precision, and Colour is the one that carries most of the practical meaning, so it is where to start.
Companionship
Relationship mechanic
Companionship is when two people carry exactly the same channel. You operate the same way in that area, which feels like easy recognition and rarely produces friction. The cost is that neither of you brings anything new there, so a connection built mostly on companionship can be comfortable and slightly static.
Completed channel
Chart structure
A channel is completed when both of its gates are activated, which joins the two centres at its ends and defines them. A channel with only one gate active is not completed, and that lone gate is called a hanging gate. Completion is what turns a theme into a consistent, reliable energy.
Composite chart
Relationship mechanic
A composite chart overlays two bodygraphs to show what the pair becomes together. Centres open in both charts stay open. Centres either of you defines are defined in the composite, which is why some people feel unusually consistent in your company and notice the absence when you are apart. That is relationship conditioning, and it is normal.
Compromise
Relationship mechanic
Compromise is when one person carries a full channel and the other carries only one of its two gates. The person with the full channel runs it consistently; the other is pulled into it without controlling it. This is the only connection that has to be earned rather than felt, and it is usually where most of the unrealised potential in a pairing sits.
Conditioning
Concept
The process by which undefined centers take in and amplify the energy of defined centers in the environment. Over time, the mind builds strategies around conditioned energy, mistaking it for authentic nature.
Conjunction
Transit mechanic
A conjunction is when a transiting planet sits on a gate you already carry. Your own theme in that gate is amplified and lit from outside at the same time. It tends to feel like more of what you already are rather than like something new arriving, which is the clearest way to tell it apart from borrowed wiring.
Connection score
Relationship mechanic
The connection score is our own measure, not classical Human Design. It weighs the electromagnetic, companionship, compromise and dominance channels between two charts into a single number, alongside a potential figure showing where the pairing could reach if the compromise channels were worked consciously. It is a summary, not a verdict, and it is most useful as a way into the detail underneath it.
Constellation
Zodiac frame
A constellation is a named pattern of stars. Thirteen of them lie along the Sun's path: the twelve familiar zodiac names and Ophiuchus. Unlike tropical signs they are not equal, running from Virgo at nearly 50 degrees to Ophiuchus at about 12. In this app they are the coordinate frame the gates are measured in. They say which stars a planet stood in front of, not who you are.
Deconditioning
Practice
Deconditioning is the long process of separating what is genuinely yours from what you absorbed. It happens mostly in the open centres, and it is not something you complete in a weekend: the usual estimate is around seven years of living by your strategy and authority. The practice is unglamorous. You notice, you do not act on the pressure, and over time the borrowed patterns lose their grip.
Defined
Chart structure
A defined centre is coloured in on the chart, which means it has a consistent energy of its own. It works the same way today as it did last year, and it broadcasts outward to the people around you. Definition is not better than openness. It is simply fixed, which makes it reliable and also makes it something you cannot easily step outside of.
Definition
Concept
Definition describes how many separate groups of connected centres your chart contains. Single definition means everything is joined, and energy moves through you as one piece. Split definition means two groups that do not touch, and you will notice a pull toward people or transits that bridge them. Triple and quadruple splits are rarer and ask for more specific conditions. A Reflector has no definition at all.
Design (unconscious)
Chart structure
Design is the red column of the chart, calculated for the moment the Sun stood exactly 88 degrees of arc before its position at birth, which is close to eighty-eight days earlier but measured in arc, not days. It runs unconsciously: it is the body rather than the personality, and other people generally see it in you long before you see it in yourself. When someone describes you in a way that feels accurate but unfamiliar, they are usually describing your Design.
Design crystal
Concept
The Design crystal is the body's inherited layer, calculated for the moment the Sun stood exactly 88 degrees of arc earlier on its path, and drawn in red on the chart. That is close to eighty-eight days before birth, but it is measured in the Sun's arc, not in days. It is unconscious: it runs whether or not you notice it, and other people usually see it in you before you do. This is the genetic and physical side of the design, as distinct from the Personality crystal, which is the part you experience as yourself.
Dominance
Relationship mechanic
Dominance is when one person defines a channel the other has no part in at all. In that specific area, one of you simply leads and the other receives. It is not a problem in itself, and it costs the connection nothing when it is said out loud. Left unspoken, it quietly holds back part of what the pairing could be.
Dormant gate
Transit mechanic
A dormant gate is one that is not activated in your chart at all. It is not missing anything, and it is not a deficiency. It simply is not part of how you are wired, and a transit landing there is wholly borrowed rather than an amplification of something already yours.
Electromagnetic connection
Relationship mechanic
An electromagnetic connection happens when you carry one gate of a channel and another person carries the other. Together you complete wiring that neither of you runs alone. This is the mechanic behind chemistry: it is felt physically, it is mutual, and it is the one connection that genuinely needs the other person present. It is also why some attractions do not survive distance.
Ephemeris
Transit mechanic
An ephemeris is a table of planetary positions over time. In the app it is the timeline that shows which gates the planets are moving through, when a current activation ends, and what is arriving next. It is the practical tool behind any transit reading, and it turns the sky from something abstract into something with dates on it.
Gate
Concept
One of 64 specific locations in the bodygraph, corresponding to one of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. Gates are activated by planetary positions at birth. A gate without its channel partner is a hanging gate.
Gene Keys
Chart structure
The Gene Keys are Richard Rudd's framework, built on the same sixty-four hexagrams as the gates. Each one is given three frequencies: a Shadow, a Gift and a Siddhi, which we show as Shadow, Gift and Light. It is a separate system from Human Design and we present it alongside rather than merged, because the two answer different questions about the same gate.
Hanging gate
Concept
A gate that is activated in the chart but whose channel partner is not. The gate is active as a theme but not powered as a channel. Can be temporarily completed by another person's chart in the aura (called electromagnetic connection).
I Ching hexagram
Chart structure
Each of the sixty-four gates corresponds to one hexagram of the I Ching, and each hexagram has six lines. That is where the gates and their lines come from. Human Design inherited the structure rather than the divinatory practice, so you do not need to consult the I Ching to read a chart, but the numbering is not arbitrary.
Incarnation Cross
Concept
The Incarnation Cross is the four-gate combination made by the Personality Sun and Earth and the Design Sun and Earth. It is the broadest context in the chart, describing the general theme of a life rather than anything you do on a given day. There are one hundred and ninety-two of them. It is worth knowing, but it is the last layer to become useful: type, strategy and authority are what change how you actually live.
Juxtaposition
Profile geometry
Juxtaposition is the fixed fate geometry, carried only by the 4/1 profile. It is the narrowest of the three, with less room to manoeuvre and a strong sense that the life runs on rails. That reads as limitation from outside and as clarity from inside: there is very little question about what this design is for.
Left Angle
Profile geometry
Left Angle profiles carry transpersonal destiny. The life works itself out through other people, so meetings and relationships are not a backdrop to the story, they are the mechanism of it. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3 are Left Angle. Things tend to arrive through someone rather than through solitary effort.
Line
Concept
Each gate has six lines, derived from the six positions of the I Ching hexagram. Lines describe the specific expression of the gate's theme. Profile is derived from the line positions of the Personality and Design Sun.
Magnetic Monopole
Concept
The force in the G Center that draws the Personality Crystal and Design Crystal together into a single being, and guides the body along its trajectory. Unlike a regular magnetic pole, it only attracts - never repels.
Mandala
Chart structure
The mandala is the wheel that surrounds the bodygraph, showing the sixty-four gates laid around the thirteen constellations on the Sun's path. It is how the astronomy becomes a chart: a planet at a given degree falls in a given gate, and the mandala is the map that makes that translation. It is also the clearest way to see that gate order and constellation order are two different things laid over each other: the gates are all the same size, and the constellations are not.
Midpoint Method
Zodiac frame
The Midpoint Method, developed by Athen Chimenti, is how this app decides where one constellation ends and the next begins. Each boundary sits on the Sun's path, halfway between the last star of one constellation and the first star of the next. These are not the International Astronomical Union's 1930 boundaries, which were drawn to map the whole sky rather than to divide the Sun's path.
Motor centre
Chart structure
There are four motors: the Sacral, the Heart, the Solar Plexus and the Root. They are the centres that generate energy rather than process information. Whether a motor connects to the Throat is what separates a Manifestor from a Projector, so this one structural fact does more work in determining type than any other.
Neutrino Ocean
Concept
The field of neutrino particles generated primarily by the Sun, that carries information about planetary positions. Ra Uru Hu proposed this as the mechanism through which planets imprint the chart at birth.
Not-self
Concept
The conditioned version of a person - the patterns, beliefs, and behaviors absorbed from others rather than expressing genuine design. Each Type has a specific not-self theme: Generator (Frustration), MG (Frustration and Anger), Projector (Bitterness), Manifestor (Anger), Reflector (Disappointment).
Not-self question
Concept
Each open centre generates its own recurring mental question, and that question is the sound of conditioning rather than a problem to solve. An open Throat asks how to get attention. An open Sacral asks when enough is enough. Noticing the question is the practical move. You are not meant to answer it, because answering it is what keeps it running.
Open center
Concept
An open centre is one that is not defined in your chart. It takes in and amplifies the energy of the people around you, which makes it the place you are most conditioned and, over time, the place you become genuinely wise. The work is not to close it. It is to stop mistaking what you are amplifying for what you are.
Penta
Relationship mechanic
A Penta is the group form that appears when three to five people work together. It is a separate mechanism from a couple: it has its own gates, it behaves like an organism, and it prioritises the survival of the group over the preferences of the individuals in it. This is why small teams develop a character that none of the members would claim.
Personality (conscious)
Chart structure
Personality is the black column of the chart, calculated from the exact moment of birth. It is the part you experience as yourself and can describe out loud. If you recognise something immediately when you read it, it is almost always coming from here rather than from the Design side.
Personality crystal
Concept
The Personality crystal is calculated from the exact moment of birth and drawn in black on the chart. It is the conscious layer, the part you experience as yourself and can talk about. Everything in the black column is something you recognise. This sits alongside the Design crystal, which runs unconsciously and is usually more obvious to other people than to you.
PHS
Concept
Primary Health System. Ra Uru Hu's term for the Variables layer - the deepest, most individual layer of the chart, describing how a specific body needs to eat, process information, inhabit environments, and move through the world.
Precession
Zodiac frame
Precession is the slow wobble of the Earth's axis, one full turn in about 26,000 years. As it turns, the point where the Sun sits at the March equinox slides backwards through the constellations, about one degree every seventy-two years. It is the reason the tropical zodiac, tied to the equinox, and the constellations, tied to the stars, no longer line up. The ayanamsa is the running measure of that drift.
Pressure centre
Chart structure
The Head and the Root are the two pressure centres, sitting at the top and bottom of the chart. The Head applies mental pressure to think and to answer questions. The Root applies physical pressure to act and to get things done. Pressure is fuel rather than a problem, and both centres cause trouble mainly when the pressure is treated as urgency.
Profile
Concept
The two-number designation derived from the line positions of the Personality and Design Sun. Describes the life geometry and learning style. Twelve profiles, grouped into Right Angle (personal destiny), Juxtaposition (fixed fate), and Left Angle (transpersonal karma).
Retrograde
Transit mechanic
Retrograde is when a planet appears to move backwards from where we watch it. In Human Design it matters mainly because it changes the order in which gates are activated and can hold a planet in one gate far longer than usual. The popular reading of retrogrades as a warning is not part of the mechanics.
Right Angle
Profile geometry
Right Angle profiles carry personal destiny. The life is largely about your own process, and other people are the context rather than the point. Profiles 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5 and 3/6 are Right Angle. This is not selfishness, it is geometry: the learning has to happen through your own experience before it is any use to anyone else.
Sacral response
Concept
The gut-level, instantaneous, binary body signal that indicates availability (yes) or non-availability (no) for Generators and Manifesting Generators. Arrives before the mind processes. Felt as expansion or contraction, often vocalized as "mm-hmm" (yes) or "unh-uh" (no).
Signature
Concept
The signature is the feeling that tells you a type is living correctly. Generators and Manifesting Generators feel satisfaction. Projectors feel success. Manifestors feel peace. Reflectors feel surprise. It is a signal rather than a goal, so it is not something to chase directly. It shows up as a by-product of using your strategy and authority, and its absence is worth more attention than its presence.
Stages of life
Practice
Human Design marks a few structural turning points, the best known being the Saturn return around age twenty-nine and the Uranus opposition around forty-two. They are not predictions. They are moments when the chart's own timing tends to force a review of whether you are living your design or someone else's.
Strategy
Concept
Strategy is the correct way for your type to engage with the world. Generators and Manifesting Generators respond rather than initiate. Projectors wait for the invitation. Manifestors inform before they act. Reflectors wait a full lunar cycle before anything significant. It sounds almost too simple to matter, and it is the single change that makes the most practical difference, because it moves decisions out of the mind and into the body.
Tone
Variables · depth
Tone sits one level below Colour and describes the sense through which the Colour operates. In Cognition, for example, Tone is what names smell, taste, outer vision, inner vision, feeling or touch. It is more specific than Colour and correspondingly more sensitive to an accurate birth time.
Transit
Concept
A transit is the current position of the sun, moon or planets, temporarily activating gates in your chart. Transits condition everyone. If a transit completes a channel you only half carry, you may feel unusually capable in that area for a day or two, then lose it when the planet moves on. That is borrowed wiring, worth noticing and not worth restructuring your life around.
Transit-only channel
Transit mechanic
A transit-only channel is one formed entirely by the sky, where neither of its gates is in your chart. It is the least personal kind of activation: everyone with a comparable chart is feeling the same thing at the same time. Reading the day's weather rather than your own design is the right frame for it.
Tropical zodiac
Zodiac frame
The tropical zodiac divides the Sun's path into twelve equal signs of 30 degrees, counted from the March equinox. It follows the seasons rather than the stars, and it is the frame most Human Design and astrology software uses. Because of precession, its signs and the constellations that share their names have drifted about a sign's width apart. This app reads charts against the constellations instead, and keeps the tropical calculation as a reference.
True sidereal
Zodiac frame
True sidereal is how this app measures every chart: against the constellations actually behind the Sun, Moon and planets, rather than against the seasons. It uses thirteen bands of unequal width, Ophiuchus included, with boundaries drawn by the Midpoint Method. The sixty-four gates keep their equal size and their traditional order; only the frame they are measured in changes. A tool that reads the tropical zodiac can therefore give the same birth a different chart.
Type
Concept
The broadest designation in Human Design, determined by the Sacral Center and how (or whether) the Throat connects to motors. Five Types: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Manifestor, Projector, Reflector.
Undefined center
Concept
An undefined centre is one with no consistent energy of its own, so it samples and amplifies whatever is around it. It is where conditioning enters, and it is also where you eventually become genuinely wise, because you have experienced that energy in every possible flavour rather than only your own. The practice is to notice without identifying.
Variables
Concept
Variables are the four arrows at the top and bottom of the chart, describing Motivation, Perspective, Cognition, Determination, Environment and Movement. Ra Uru Hu called this layer PHS, the Primary Health System. It is the most individual and the most practically specific part of the design, covering how your body needs to eat, how your mind takes in information, and what kind of space you function in. It is also advanced material, and it only adds clarity once type, authority and centres are solid.
Weather
Transit mechanic
Weather is our word for the general quality of a day's transits, as distinct from what those transits do to your specific chart. It is shared: everyone is under the same sky. Reading the weather first and your own activations second keeps you from taking a collective mood personally.
