Why your chart is read against the real sky

Every chart the app casts is read against the real constellations. There is no zodiac switch, on any plan. That is not because the other option is hidden behind a price. It is because we think "where were the planets?" has only one honest answer.

This article used to say the opposite. Until September 2026 the app calculated tropical, like almost every other Human Design tool. That changed, and this is why.

What the difference actually is

Both approaches divide the same circle into the same 64 gates. They disagree about where the circle starts, and about what the divisions are.

• Tropical anchors zero degrees to the March equinox, the Sun's position at the moment spring begins in the northern hemisphere. Twelve equal slices of 30°. It is a seasonal frame that borrowed the constellations' names.
• True sidereal anchors to the constellations themselves. There are thirteen of them along the Sun's path, and they are not equal.

The second point is the one people miss. Virgo occupies a little under 50° of the Sun's path. Ophiuchus, the thirteenth constellation and the one the twelve-sign zodiac leaves out, occupies about 12°. Slicing the sky into twelve equal parts was a convenience, not an observation.

Where the boundaries come from

Something has to decide where one constellation ends and the next begins. The app uses the Midpoint Method developed by Athen Chimenti, which draws each boundary along the Sun's path itself, the same path along which every position in your chart is measured.

These are not the boundaries of the International Astronomical Union's 1930 constellation map. That map was made for a different job. It divides the whole sky into areas using right ascension and declination, without reference to the Sun's path, so where its borders happen to cross that path is a side effect rather than a design choice. It is a good map of the sky. It was not built to say which constellation the Sun stood in.

Why they have come apart

The Earth wobbles on its axis, one full turn every 26,000 years or so. When the tropical zodiac was fixed, its Aries and the constellation Aries were roughly the same patch of sky. They are not any more, and they drift by about one degree every seventy-two years.

For your chart the practical effect is a shift of about four and a half gates. That is not a rounding difference. Moving from the tropical zodiac to the real sky changes the Type for about seven in ten people, and the Profile and the Incarnation Cross for nearly everyone.

The overall mix barely moves: there are about as many Generators, Manifesting Generators, Projectors, Manifestors and Reflectors as before. What changes is who is which.

Which one mainstream Human Design uses

Tropical. The system as it is taught and published almost everywhere uses the tropical zodiac, and most other calculators you are likely to try will too.

We are not claiming those charts are worthless. People have clearly got value from them for decades, and the interpretive layer is the same one we use. We are claiming something narrower and, we think, harder to argue with: if a chart says the Sun was in Aries, the Sun should have been in Aries.

That is the whole position. It does not require anyone to be wrong about anything else.

So my chart here disagrees with the one I have

It probably does, and that article explains what to expect. The short version: nothing is broken, and neither chart is a corrupted copy of the other. They were measured against different skies.

If you have lived with a tropical chart for years and it fits, that is worth taking seriously. It is your experience, and this app does not get a vote on it. Read both. The one that describes you is the one that describes you.

Is the tropical calculation still there?

Yes, in the engine, for reference. It is not a choice in the app, because a switch beside the claim would undo the claim. It stays because it is the control we test against. A large set of tests check that the tropical chart has not moved by a single gate, which is how we know the new model did not quietly leak into the old one.
