Work hard. Push. Do not wait for anyone to hand you anything.
You were handed that advice, and so was everyone standing next to you. For some of them it worked: they pushed, things moved, the method got confirmed. If you ran it and it burned you out, the difference was not effort and it was not discipline. That advice describes one specific design, the one type built to start things from nothing, and about one in ten people has it.
This is the job the five Human Design types do. Your type is not a personality label and not a result you score. It is how your energy meets the world, and from that, the one way of moving through work and decisions that stops fighting your wiring. It is the first thing to learn, and everything else in the chart stands on it.
The five Human Design types
There are five Human Design types: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, and Reflector. Your type is set by your birth date, time, and place, and it does not change. About two in three people are Generators or Manifesting Generators.

Three of those columns need naming before you go looking for yourself. Your strategy is the one move your design runs on: the timing that lets a good decision happen at all. Your signature is what being on track feels like from the inside. Your not-self theme is the feeling that arrives when you are running somebody else's method. Treat that last one as a dashboard light, not a fault.
How your type is decided
Type is mechanical. It comes down to two questions about your chart, and the calculation answers both before you have an opinion.
First: is your Sacral defined? The Sacral is the gut center, the body's renewable engine, the place a wordless yes or no shows up before you have built a reason for it. Colored in on your bodygraph, the nine-shape body diagram your chart draws, means defined, and defined means it runs the same way today as it will next year.
Second: is your Throat connected to a motor by an unbroken chain of definition? The Throat is where things turn into speech and action. A motor is a center that generates drive, the part of the machine that supplies force rather than awareness.
Those two answers sort everyone into five groups:
- Sacral defined, no motor wired through to the Throat: Generator
- Sacral defined, a motor wired through to the Throat: Manifesting Generator
- Sacral undefined, no motor wired through to the Throat: Projector
- Sacral undefined, a motor wired through to the Throat: Manifestor
- Nothing defined anywhere: Reflector

The wrong manual
Burnout in the rarer types is a filing error.
You are not lazy. You are a Projector running a Generator schedule.
About one in five people is a Projector, which means no defined Sacral, which means no fixed engine, which means the constant-output day was never mechanically available. Hand that person the standard advice and they do not conclude that the manual is wrong. They conclude that something is wrong with them, and then they push harder, which is the one move that guarantees it gets worse.
The error runs in every direction. A Manifestor waiting for a permission that is never going to arrive. A Generator told to be a self-starter, initiating from a plan the gut never answered. A Reflector pressed to decide on the spot, when the design needs a month of sampling first.
Your type does not make you capable or incapable. It tells you which method your body will cooperate with.
Generator: built to respond
About 37% of people are Generators, and you are one if your Sacral is defined and no motor runs through to your Throat. You carry the renewable engine, and it is built to be fully spent on work you want to be doing.
Your aura is open and enveloping. It does not push out, it draws in, so people, offers, problems, and openings arrive at you without your arranging them. That is the whole reason for your strategy. You are not here to invent the opportunity from nothing. You are here to be selective about the ones already arriving.
So your move is to respond. Something real shows up, and you check the gut before the mind starts building its case. A yes is a rising warmth, an "mm-hmm." A no is flat, a small contraction, an "unh-uh." The response is felt before it is thought, and most of learning your design is rebuilding trust in that signal instead of talking over it.
Commit to what the gut answered and the day ends spent but not wasted: that is satisfaction. Commit from a good argument the gut never confirmed and you meet frustration. Frustration is not a character flaw. It is a reading, and it points straight at the commitments you talked yourself into.
The engine also has to be emptied before sleep works. Going to bed before you are tired leaves the Sacral churning. That is not insomnia. That is an unspent engine.

Manifesting Generator: respond, then inform
About 33% of people are Manifesting Generators, and you are one if your Sacral is defined and a motor is wired through to your Throat by unbroken definition. Same engine as the Generator, same open and enveloping aura, same strategy, same satisfaction, same frustration. What the Throat connection adds is a direct route from response to action, so you can answer and move in the same breath.
That is why you skip steps. You start three things at once, find the shortcut through a process other people work through in order, double back for the one step that turned out to matter, and arrive first anyway. It is not impatience. It is how you are built.
The speed is also what costs you. Your actions land on other people before they have registered that anything was happening. So your move has two beats: respond, then inform. Not permission, not a case for the defense, just telling the people your action will touch what is coming, before it comes. Skip that and you collect resistance that has nothing to do with whether the decision was right.

Projector: built to guide, and to be recognized
About 21% of people are Projectors, and you are one if your Sacral is undefined and no motor reaches your Throat. You have no fixed engine. That single fact is what most of your working life has been quietly organized around.
What you have instead is a focused, penetrating aura. It reaches into the other person and reads them: how they operate, what they are doing rather than what they say they are doing, where the system they are inside of is bent. Seeing people that way is not a soft skill you developed. It is automatic, which is why the structural problem tends to be obvious to a Projector months before it is obvious to the room.
Because that attention goes in deep, it needs to be welcomed before it lands as useful rather than intrusive. So your move is to wait for the invitation on the big things: the role, the relationship, the real commitment. That is not sitting still and hoping. It is building mastery in something specific, staying visible with it, and letting recognition come to what you have become.
A genuine invitation is explicit. Someone names what they see in you and asks for you in particular, in something that matters. Friendly conversation is not an invitation. A small question is not an invitation.
Offer guidance nobody asked for, or take a role that came from convenience rather than recognition, and you get bitterness: I gave everything and nobody saw it. Get recognized and invited into work that wants what you are, and you get success, which for you has less to do with winning than with being in exactly the right place.
Then there is the energy. Standing next to a Generator you can amplify their energy all day, but you cannot hold it, and the crash afterward is that borrowed energy leaving. It is not evidence about you. You are built for focused bursts and deep rest.

Manifestor: built to initiate
About 10% of people are Manifestors, and you are one if your Sacral is undefined and a motor is connected to your Throat by unbroken definition: the Heart, the Solar Plexus, or the Root. You are the one type designed to start something without waiting to respond to it or be asked for it. The cultural picture of the doer was drawn from your design, which is strange arithmetic for one person in ten.
Your aura is closed and repelling. It creates a barrier other people feel before you have said a word. They cannot predict what you will do next, and unpredictable energy makes people reach for the controls, which is why a Manifestor spends so much of life being questioned, checked, and managed.
That is where the anger comes from. It is the anger of someone who keeps getting stopped mid-motion, and it is diagnostic: it marks the point where the informing stopped or the initiating got suppressed.
Your move is to inform. Not ask, not build consensus, not justify. Tell the people your action will affect what you are about to do, before you do it. Informing dissolves the resistance that independent action otherwise gathers, because people stop bracing once they know what is coming. Inform and you move freely. Skip it and you meet walls, then spend your energy being angry at walls you built yourself.
When you are informing, moving from your own authority, and nobody has a hand on the wheel, the signal is peace: nothing to push against, nothing to escape.

Reflector: the rare mirror
About 1% of people are Reflectors, and you are one if nothing in your bodygraph is defined at all. An open chart, every center white, roughly one person in a hundred.
Nothing in you is fixed, which makes you the most sensitive type to where you are and who is in the room. Your aura is resistant and sampling: it takes energy in, tastes it, and reflects it back rather than holding on to it. That makes you a barometer of whatever community you are living inside. In a healthy one you feel vital and clear. In a depleting one you take on the depletion and hand it back, and it can take a long time to work out that the heaviness was never yours.
With no fixed definition, your clarity arrives through time rather than through a signal. The Moon takes about 29.5 days to pass through every position on the chart, lighting up different parts of your open bodygraph for a day or two at a time. Across one full cycle you pass through every configuration you are capable of.
So your move is to wait a full lunar cycle on major decisions. Start sampling straight away. Talk it through with different trusted people at different points, not for their advice but to hear what you sound like in each context. The answer that survives the whole cycle is the correct one.
Rushed into a decision, or living somewhere that does not nourish you, the signal is disappointment, and it points at the place and the people far more often than at the choice. In the right environment with the right timing, the signal is surprise: things arriving in ways you could not have planned for.

Can a quiz tell me my type?
Type is calculated, not self-reported. A questionnaire can only read your self-description, and self-description is the thing conditioning distorts most: a person raised to perform as a self-starter answers like one. The chart does not have that problem.
Which Human Design type is the rarest?
The Reflector, at roughly 1% of people. A Reflector has no defined centers at all, an open bodygraph throughout, and reflects the health of the surrounding environment back to it. The Manifestor is the next rarest at about 10%. Rarity carries no ranking with it: what it means in practice is that the standard advice was written for somebody else's design.
Which Human Design type is the most common?
Generators, at about 37%, followed by Manifesting Generators at about 33%. Together they are roughly 65 to 70% of everyone, which is why "wait to respond" is the most widely applicable move in the whole system. Projectors are about 21%, Manifestors about 10%, and Reflectors about 1%.
Are there four types or five?
Both counts are in use and they describe identical mechanics. In Ra Uru Hu's original teaching the Manifesting Generator is a sub-type of Generator: the strategy, signature, not-self theme, and aura are the same for both. Schools that count four fold it back into Generator. Schools that count five list it separately because the lived experience of a motor wired to the Throat, the speed and the skipped steps, is different enough to name.
Can your Human Design type change?
No. Your type is fixed by your birth data and stays the same for life. What changes is how well you are living it. Someone who has spent twenty years running the wrong strategy has the same type as the day they were born, and the practice is not becoming a different type but running the one you have on purpose.
